Gator Welcomes Canoers at Wekiva Springs Rally

Wekiva Falls RV Resort is one of our club’s favorite destinations for rallies. Filled with amenities, this resort has something for everyone! Their lake connects with a river that flows beyond the resort, making for great kayaking or canoeing. Wildlife both near and in the waters make travelling these waterways fascinating. But like all Florida waters, alligators can be found and signs warning of their existence should not be ignored!

One of our members who attended this rally in June, 2025, reported the following adventure: “we stayed until Monday, and as we do every time we are there, we rented a canoe from the camp store and paddled down the river, which is beautiful and a very pleasant thing to do.  But this time, when we paddled into one of the many large tributaries of the river and before we hit the spring, we inadvertently disturbed an alligator.  It bolted underneath our canoe and thrashed around us but did not hit our canoe or ram us, but took off in the opposite direction, leaving a 5-6 foot plume of mud in the water on both sides and in front of our canoe.

It happened in about 3’ of water and it could have easily overturned the canoe.  We back-paddled as fast as we could out of the tributary back into the main river, but it was a pretty scary situation.  The alligator warnings are very real. We thought people should be warned that if they go into the Wekiva, not to go into the tributaries and to stay in the main river.”
